Are you a traditionalist, or realist?

People have strong feelings when it comes to wedding gift lists.

Back when your Nanna was getting spliced, gift lists helped set the newly weds up in their new home together. The result? 4 toasters, ugly crockery, unidentifiable cutlery (who knew there were spoons specifically for chutney??) and scratchy towels. As they’d no doubt had moved directly from their parents homes, they probably had none of these new fangled gifts.

Strangely, these superstore goods remain the staple items on the typical British wedding list.

Times change (sorry Auntie Sheila.) In recent years couples have moved towards registry services at department stores, which remove the duplication issue. BUT it does leave guests at the mercy of over excited brides with pricing guns. Bridal registries also make it difficult for couples to pool cash together for bigger purchases.

When the current husband was lucky enough to marry me, we had been living in sin for years (sorry Dad, I did naughties.) We had all of the usual gubbins, and neither of us like toast. So we decided to go down a different route – an online honeymoon fund.

After googling like an excited puppy, I decided to go with Buy Our Honeymoon. I was drawn to them for a number of reasons:

  • They don’t steal any of your guests pennies. Once you’ve paid your joining fee, that’s it.
  • The money comes straight to you.
  • There are no annoying adverts for holiday companies.
  • There are loads of templates to chose from, so you can pick a theme that matches your personalities.
  • You can add as many or few entries as your wish.
  • You can add gifts which allow multiple guests to contribute small amounts.

You can add anything you like to your gift list — from a few miles of your flight over the ocean to a balloon flight over the Serengeti; the first night of your hotel stay to a farewell drink at the airport on your return. They provide little cards you can include in your invites, making it super simple for everyone.Your guests choose any of the ideas you’ve listed, and leave you a personal message. They then pay the value of their gift to you directly, and can print off a gift certificate to give you on your big day.

But don’t just take my word for it – here’s some more info from the lovely pixies that run Buy Our Honeymoon.

Buy Our Honeymoon has been the UK’s top dedicated honeymoon fund service for more than 10 years now. We initially created the site for our own wedding in 2005. The enthusiastic response from our wedding guests, and the incredible honeymoon our wedding gifts enabled us to have, prompted us to go public in April 2007, and we haven’t looked back since.

Our service lets you turn your wedding gifts into contributions towards the honeymoon of your dreams. Instead of pillow cases, have the first night in a tropical paradise. Instead of wine glasses, have dinner with an ocean view. You can include anything you can think of, and fund it through your gifts.

We’re constantly expanding and improving the service. Already this year we’ve added or updated three of our design themes for your honeymoon gift list, we’ve made it easier to create a really simple honeymoon fund, we’ve introduced photo filters and new international pricing, and we’ve added another option to our wide choice of web addresses for your list.

Buy Our Honeymoon is uniquely flexible, and makes it easy to get creative with your registry. You can mix one-off gifts and open contributions on the same list, divide your list up into any number of custom sections and display your gift items in any order you like. There’s plenty of room for you to provide a full description of each item, and you can even include simple formatting and links.

And your guests will love it! It’s so easy to feel invested in the gift of a safari expedition or tickets to a Broadway show — gifts that are more romantic and personal than a new frying pan, and much more meaningful than just cash.
